Round 1 of 6

Where is your heart?

The figure faces you, so its right side is on your left.

The short answer

Where are my organs located?

Your heart sits in the center of your chest, leaning left. Your liver fills the upper right of your abdomen, just under the diaphragm. Your stomach and spleen sit upper left. Your kidneys are at the back, just below the ribs, either side of the spine. Your appendix is lower right.

Those placements come from the National Cancer Institute's SEER anatomy modules (cited November 3, 2026), the NHS spleen page, the NHS appendicitis page and the NIH kidney guide. The most common slip in the game above is the mirror: a body facing you has its right side on your left.

Most organ mix-ups aren't anatomy mistakes. They're mirror mistakes.

Where each organ actually sits

Heart

Center of the chest, near the lungs, roughly fist-sized, with about two-thirds of its mass left of the midline.

NHLBI; NCI SEER

Liver

Upper right abdomen and the upper middle, just beneath the diaphragm. The largest organ inside your body.

NCI SEER; MedlinePlus

Stomach

Upper left quadrant of the abdomen, receiving food from the esophagus.

NCI SEER

Spleen

Fist-sized, upper left of the abdomen, next to the stomach and behind the left ribs.

NHS

Kidneys

Just below the rib cage, one each side of the spine, against the back wall. The right one usually sits a little lower, pushed down by the liver.

NIDDK; NCI SEER

Appendix

A small pouch joined to the bowel in the lower right of the abdomen.

NHS

The surprising one

Kidneys are a back organ. Each is about the size of a fist, and together they filter about 150 quarts of blood a day, according to the NIDDK.

NIDDK, "Your Kidneys & How They Work"

Liver right, spleen left, kidneys at the back, appendix low on the right.

Body map questions

Is the heart on the left side?
Mostly in the middle. The NHLBI says your heart is in the center of your chest, and NCI anatomy training notes that about two-thirds of its mass sits left of the midline, which is why it feels like the left.
Which side is the liver on?
The right. NCI's SEER anatomy module places it mainly in the upper right abdomen and upper middle, just beneath the diaphragm.
Are the kidneys in the front or the back?
The back. The NIDDK says they sit just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine, and NCI notes they lie against the back wall of the abdomen.
Where is the appendix?
Lower right of the abdomen. The NHS adds that appendicitis pain usually starts around the belly button and moves to the lower right after a few hours.
What organs are on the left side of the abdomen?
In the upper left, the stomach and the spleen. The NHS places the spleen next to the stomach, behind the left ribs.

How the app's Assemble the Body works

  1. One organ at a time

The app hands you a single organ to place.

  2. Touch and watch

Touch the body and the nearest spot lights up. Lift to place it where it really sits, with hints when you're stuck.

  3. Learn the link

Each organ comes with a fact and a nutrient link, so the map connects to what you eat.

Honest limits

  • This game is a simplified map. Organs overlap and shift with breathing, posture and body shape. It shows the textbook position, not yours.
  • It can't tell you why something hurts. Pain location is a clue for a clinician, not a diagnosis. If you have sudden, severe or worsening tummy pain, get medical help.
  • Body Unpacked is education only. Its content is checked by the developer against cited public sources and hasn't been independently reviewed by a clinician.

This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician.

Who should pick something else

  • Students who need a full 3D anatomy atlas with every muscle and bone: a dedicated anatomy app suits you better.
  • Anyone wanting symptom checking: Body Unpacked doesn't diagnose.
  • Our design decision: the app links organs to foods and nutrients, so it's built for curious adults, not exam cramming.
